Tips on How to Control Worrying

If you really sit down and start to think about it, there are countless things in life that a person can choose to worry about. One can worry that he or she will say or do the wrong thing when engaging in public speaking. Or, perhaps the anxiety is related that others will view them as overweight or unattractive at a social event. Maybe the person frets about not being able to wake up when the alarm goes off. Or, perhaps they constantly stress out about others and their decisions. Whatever the source of the stress and anxiety, it is time to learn how to control worrying and live a higher quality of life.
The following are helpful tips on how to control worrying and avoid having stress and anxiety rule your life:
  • Acknowledge your worries. Think about what it is that you are fretting about, and what you can do to change it. Sometimes there are ways that you can take action. Other times, there is nothing that you can do. Figure out if you can or can't do anything. If you can, do it. If you can't, then you need to tell yourself that no matter how much you continue to be anxious about whatever it is that is bothering you, it won't change anything.

  • Find a good listener. Sometimes being able to talk about what is bothering you really helps. Sometimes the person you tell can give you helpful advice. Other times, it can be a relief to have someone else be sympathetic or even empathetic to your issue.

  • Distract yourself. This can be one of the most effective ways of how to control worrying. If you can do something else that will occupy your mind, then you can stop focusing on whatever it happens to be that is causing you the stress and anxiety. Consider going for a brisk walk while listening to music, or even jog, if you like. Any form of rigorous exercise is good. Not only will it take your mind off of your problems, it also will allow your body to release endorphins which are basically "feel good" chemicals.
